World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to an item are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.
Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specified amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's base stats increases when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on who you hire and what you do. This is due to the variety of perks that have to be changed in order to upgrade an item.
It is also used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to determine a gating condition when waiting for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is restricted to an lower level). The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.
Using the item level will allow players to compare the power of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's an indicator of the item's condition and its quality. Comparing items in a vendor's stock is possible using the level of the item.
The level of the item can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including ilvl. It can also be located by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are various theories on how the calculation of an item's level is done. One theory states that the level of an item is calculated using a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats really are. It takes into consideration that different benefits are valued differently and that gems found in sockets increase the item's value. This process can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl, which is typically close to Blizzard's real item level.
It's not the only factor that influences the ilvl of an item. The degree of the area in which the item dropped can also alter its stats. For example it can increase the item's haste or crit score. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The stats of an item can make or break an item for players. The game utilizes them in many ways to encourage players not to restrict themselves to a particular weapon and to encourage players to explore other weapons. The stat mods on a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by a player's skill.
The upgrades to an item can boost its stats. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, while items with rare tiers can be upgraded many times with higher prices.
Another method to alter the stats of an item is to use affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Affixes are used to give items additional damage or special abilities (such as revitalizing dead or reducing cooling downs) or to make them unique by adding a name.
At present, all affixes can be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button, which is accompanied by the arrows that circle. It will cost a set amount of gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges as with other rerolling methods.
In addition to rerolling affixes, players can also choose which of the available stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges of an item are based on the item level, but all items are guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within the specified range, unless it's a unique item or a God roll from a boss of a raid.
This is another thing that could be altered by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to enhance. However, as with the base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item basis, and the item compare interface will not show all the stats that could be either lost or gained at the same time.

However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade item s. It simply gives players the chance to upgrade their equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more valuable in early game runs than later ones as most players prioritize higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.
Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. They can also be increased by using anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor, and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be improved by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to add another 40 luck or to boost an item's existing Luck up to 140.
Certain items, such as the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any ability that is able to deal damage by 5percent. These items are available from the shop, or they can be made using the correct ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to boost their success rate or prevent them from losing an item if the upgrade fails.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special materials. The chance of success can only be increased as much, and the likelihood that the upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..
The success of an upgrade is also affected by the luck of the item. Each item has an initial success rate of 25% and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.
Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects can be obstructed by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
